This article describes how Firefox handles downloaded files for different types of content, such as saving a file or opening an application installed on your computer, and how you can change that behavior.
When you click on a link to download a file, you may see a dialog asking whether you want to save the file or open it with a specific application, if there is no download action already set for that file type. Thethe Media type, also called the MIME type or Content type, as configured by the web server, will determine what action Firefox will take.
Firefox will not be able to properly handle a file if a misconfigured web server sends it with an incorrect content type. For example, Firefox may display the content as plain text instead of opening the file in an application. To learn more, see Properly configuring server MIME types and Common MIME types at MDN web docs. You can contact the website in such cases, or you can try a Firefox add-on such as Content-Type Fixer to work around the problem. (If you use an add-on and need help with it, you should visit the add-on site or contact the add-on developer for support.)
When you tell Firefox to open or save a file and also check the option "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" in the "What should Firefox do with this file?" prompt,If Firefox does not have a set download action for a type of file, Firefox will save the file by default. If you select Always Open Similar Files in the Downloads panel right-click context menu for the file, (see below) a new Content Type and Action entry will be added to the General panel Applications section of Firefox settings.
When you click on a link to download a file and Firefox doesn't have a content type and download action set up for that type of file, Firefox will save the file by default. If you want Firefox to ask you what to do with these downloads, you can go to the bottom of the Applications section under What should Firefox do with other files? and select Ask whether to open or save files.
Starting in Firefox version 101, when you choose Ask whether to open or save files in Firefox settings under Applications (as shown above) and you download a file with no defined content type and action, you will see a What should Firefox do with this file? prompt. When you choose an action and also select the option, Do this automatically for files like this from now on, a new Content Type and Action entry will be added to the Applications list for that type of file. See the "What should Firefox do with this file?" prompt section below, for more information.
When you select Always Open Similar Files from the context menu for a downloaded item, the file will open in the system default application and a new Content Type entry will be added to the Applications section of Firefox settings, with the download action set to use that application. The next time you download that type of file and open the context menu, the Always Open Similar Files option will be check marked.
If you change the action for a defined file type to Always ask or if you select Ask whether to open or save files for other files not listed in the Applications section of Firefox settings (see above), you will see a What should Firefox do with this file? prompt for those downloaded files.
If you are having problems with how Firefox is handling file downloads that you can't resolve, or if you just want to start fresh, you can restore the default content types and actions by refreshing Firefox. To learn more, see Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.
I recently reset Firefox. Before whenever I downloaded a file, it automatically prompted me if I wanted to open the file or save it to my computer, with saving it to my computer preselected. This was fine because I almost never want to open these downloads automatically, and I like all my downloads to go into my downloads folder on a separate drive with much more space (not the temp folder on C:\). The option "do this automatically for files like this from now on" was useful for the rare file type that I would want to open automatically (usually because it's a very small music file or something).
Now every time I download virtually any file type, the prompt comes up with 'open the file' preselected, and "do this automatically for files like this from now on" greyed out. As a result, on more than one occasion, I have mistakenly clicked ok and opened huge files automatically after downloading (which has resulted in them popping open even hours later and playing automatically once the download finished). I'd like to be able to select "save it to my computer" and have it do this automatically, but that option is greyed out.
The help available seems to suggest going into options>Applications and changing the action for the appropriate content type, but:(a) not all the content types I download are listed, i.e. .mov, .mpeg, .rar, etc. (b) changing the action for the content types I do have (.wmv and compressed/zipped folder only) has done absolutely nothing.
Is it possible you had a download-related extension before? To compare settings and extensions, please retain the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop. Aside from checking the extensions in there, it would be interesting to run a text file comparison on your currently active prefs.js file and your old one in that folder.
"I'm out of time to address the problem with "do this automatically" but there is one suggestion for why it could be grayed out in this article: Change what Firefox does when you click on or download a file. "
-I saw that article before posting. I believe it suggests that the option might be greyed out because of the website I'm downloading the file from incorrectly the filetype. However this is a problem I have been having from every site I have downloaded from - and every site worked fine before my reset.
Yup, the old mimeTypes.rdf file seems to have worked. The prompt now defaults on "save file" and the checkbox for "do this automatically for files like this from now on" is clickable once more. Seems weird that a reset of Firefox would do something like that, but at least it works again for me. Thanks!
I have just the opposite problem, how do I get Firefox to notify me when downloads are complete, show me where they are and offer me a chance to run them? It used to do it, now I often forget I downloaded something because it does it in the background and I have to go chase down the "download" folder which I can hardly ever find.
Hi timlturner, if you are running Firefox 20 or later, there should be a green downloads arrow on the toolbar that lists your recent downloads. This article has more information: Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox.
This was the solution I needed. Did a reset and when downloading RAR files the "do this automatically" was greyed out. Had a hard time even finding the current profile but your answer saved the day. Thanks.
